Make
a Tool Poster
in Fireworks
This is a short tutorial from the Fireworks 4 f/x & Design
book. The main techniques used in this poster are the punch command
and aligning objects. Here is the finished project.

You will perform all the steps necessary for this project except
add the tools. I don't have permission to supply the original clipart
used from the Hemera Photo Objects 50,000 Premium Image Collection.
But any clipart you have will do. The clipart is supplied with the
book as well as 500 free photo objects by Hemera.

| Open a new document, File|New
with a size of 200 pixels by 200 pixels. |

Select the Rectangle
tool and draw a rectangle to cover the entire canvas. Open the
Fill panel (Window|Fill) and in the Fill category choose Cone
and in the Preset gradient color sets choose Copper. |

In the Layers panel (Window|Layers)
click the yellow folder icon to add a new layer. Select the
Rectangle tool and draw a rectangle around the whole canvas.
In the Fill panel use a Solid fill with the color of Hex #996600
press Enter/Return. |

Select the Ellipse
tool, hold the Shift key and draw a constrained circle on
the canvas. In the Info panel set the size to a Height and
Width of 21, press Return/Enter. |

In the Fill panel change
the fill to white so you can see the circle. Select the circle
and press the Alt/Option key and drag a copy, five times. |

Choose View|Rulers
and pull a guide from the left side of the ruler to just inside
the canvas leaving a small border on the right, repeat for
the left side. Drag another guide down from the top ruler
making a small top border and repeat for the bottom border.
With the Pointer tool drag one circle to the top left intersection
of the horizontal and vertical guides. Place another circle
at the bottom left intersection. Arrange the rest of the circles
anywhere in between. |

Shift select all six
circles and choose Modify|Align|Distribute Heights. This image
shows the guide placement and the first row of circles. |

Deselect the line
of circles by clicking anywhere on the canvas. Select one
circle and press the Alt/Option key and drag a copy, four
times. Place one circle in the intersection at the top right
corner. Place the other four circles anywhere between the
existing first circle on the left side and the last one you
just placed in the top right corner. Shift select all six
circles and choose Modify|Align|Distribute Widths, and deselect. |

Place
a guide under each of the circles going down the left side
of the canvas. Shift select the second through the sixth circle
of the top row, choose Edit|Copy then Edit|Paste and drag
into position in the second row.
Here are the guides and the second row in place.

Continue copying
and pasting (or Alt/Option dragging) the five circles into
the rest of the rows. Deselect by clicking on a blank area
of the canvas. If you grouped anything while copying then
be sure to ungroup.

Select all of the circles[control] + A then hold down [shift] and click the brown background. Then hold down [Control] + J to join. Now choose Modify|Combine|Punch.

When you finish all
the punching go to the Effect panel, choose Shadow and Glow|Drop
Shadow and accept the default. Select the Text tool, click
on the canvas. In the Text dialog box enter the text Tools
and choose your font. This example uses the font Staccato55BT,
a Size of 92 and a Leading of 60%. When you choose the options
you want click Ok. In the Fill panel choose Pattern for the
Fill category and Illusion for the Fill name, the Edge is
Anti-Alias.

All that is left
is to place the tools. The wrench and pliers are from the
Hemera Photo Objects 50,000 Premium Image Collection
Open each image you want to use, drag onto the canvas. With
the image selected press the Q key and rotate each tool (or
object) the way you want.
