Make a Tool Poster in Fireworks

This is a short tutorial from the Fireworks 4 f/x & Design book. The main techniques used in this poster are the punch command and aligning objects. Here is the finished project.

You will perform all the steps necessary for this project except add the tools. I don't have permission to supply the original clipart used from the Hemera Photo Objects 50,000 Premium Image Collection. But any clipart you have will do. The clipart is supplied with the book as well as 500 free photo objects by Hemera.

1

Open a new document, File|New with a size of 200 pixels by 200 pixels.

2
Select the Rectangle tool and draw a rectangle to cover the entire canvas. Open the Fill panel (Window|Fill) and in the Fill category choose Cone and in the Preset gradient color sets choose Copper.

3

In the Layers panel (Window|Layers) click the yellow folder icon to add a new layer. Select the Rectangle tool and draw a rectangle around the whole canvas. In the Fill panel use a Solid fill with the color of Hex #996600 press Enter/Return.

4

Select the Ellipse tool, hold the Shift key and draw a constrained circle on the canvas. In the Info panel set the size to a Height and Width of 21, press Return/Enter.

5

In the Fill panel change the fill to white so you can see the circle. Select the circle and press the Alt/Option key and drag a copy, five times.

6

Choose View|Rulers and pull a guide from the left side of the ruler to just inside the canvas leaving a small border on the right, repeat for the left side. Drag another guide down from the top ruler making a small top border and repeat for the bottom border. With the Pointer tool drag one circle to the top left intersection of the horizontal and vertical guides. Place another circle at the bottom left intersection. Arrange the rest of the circles anywhere in between.

7

Shift select all six circles and choose Modify|Align|Distribute Heights. This image shows the guide placement and the first row of circles.

8

Deselect the line of circles by clicking anywhere on the canvas. Select one circle and press the Alt/Option key and drag a copy, four times. Place one circle in the intersection at the top right corner. Place the other four circles anywhere between the existing first circle on the left side and the last one you just placed in the top right corner. Shift select all six circles and choose Modify|Align|Distribute Widths, and deselect.

9

Place a guide under each of the circles going down the left side of the canvas. Shift select the second through the sixth circle of the top row, choose Edit|Copy then Edit|Paste and drag into position in the second row.  Here are the  guides and the second row in place.

10

Continue copying and pasting (or Alt/Option dragging) the five circles into the rest of the rows. Deselect by clicking on a blank area of the canvas. If you grouped anything while copying then be sure to ungroup.

11

Select all of the circles[control] + A then hold down [shift] and click the brown background. Then hold down [Control] + J to join. Now choose Modify|Combine|Punch.

(This power tip provided by Glynnder)

12

When you finish all the punching go to the Effect panel, choose Shadow and Glow|Drop Shadow and accept the default. Select the Text tool, click on the canvas. In the Text dialog box enter the text Tools and choose your font. This example uses the font Staccato55BT, a Size of 92 and a Leading of 60%. When you choose the options you want click Ok. In the Fill panel choose Pattern for the Fill category and Illusion for the Fill name, the Edge is Anti-Alias.

13

All that is left is to place the tools. The wrench and pliers are from the Hemera Photo Objects 50,000 Premium Image Collection  Open each image you want to use, drag onto the canvas. With the image selected press the Q key and rotate each tool (or object) the way you want.
